Roulette Terms

Black	One kind of the roulette bets, placing on the black numbers. Pays 1 to 1.
Block Betting	The set of numbers on one section of the wheel that are bet as one group in certain roulette strategies.
Column Bet	A bet on a complete column of numbers, one of the three available. Pays 2 to 1.
Corner Bet	A four-number bet. Pays 8 to 1.
Coup	One roll; one decision. Winning bet.

In a game existing so long, involving only the random luck of numbers and a ball, many have claimed to discover a "system", a special strategy to beat roulette. During these hundreds of years, the systems were checked over and over again, mostly resulting in revealing the so-called system as just foolishness. These systems have tempting names like Fibonacci, Martingale, D'Alembert and Labouchere. The one thing they all have in common is that they are all based on increasing your bets as you lose. Most of them put their bet on the even money wagers like red or black.

The two most famous ones are Martingale and D'Alembert. In Martingale you double your wager after every loss until you finally win. Notice that when you do win, you'll only be one unit ahead. D'Alembert is only slightly different. This is a technique related to increasing one unit of wager each time you lose and cutting back a unit when you win.

No matter what the system, there is one very big problem. These systems involve risking very large sums of money while winning these kinds of bets only pays even money. In order to keep up with one of these systems the player has to have enough money to go on doubling his bet while gambling no matter how many times he loses. You can't count on a certain number of times that will then create a win and if you run out of money before that win comes you will lose a lot.

Another known "strategy" in more modern times is "biased wheels" where some flaw in the wheel itself creates an edge because the ball seems to fall in a certain "sector" more often than it should on a random basis. Roulette Story

After four years of saving $225,000, Jade Coal, a 39 engineer from Spain decided to take his dream to Las Vegas for the ultimate roulette spin.

Wanting to bet it all on one spin of the wheel, Jade searched Las Vegas for a casino. After turned down by a few, he was referred to Binion's Horseshoe Club in the Downtown area. The Horseshoe, although having at the time, a limit of $100,000 on red or black roulette bets agreed to accept the unconventional bet. In addition, the casino agreed to "block out" the double zero on the wheel, which does not exist in the European version of the game.

Jade chose red as his color. After the casino and the dealer agreed to a few "practice spins", he made his bet - on red. The ball landed on the red 7. He had won $220,000 - and immediately asked his winnings be placed in the casino cage. Jade also vowed never to gamble again.

It was the largest roulette bet in the 44 year history of the casino.

How To Play Roulette

Playing roulette is simple. In the land-based casinos all you do is place your bets on the marked area of the table and the dealer who conducts the game does the rest while you wait in suspense. When it comes to Web Based Gambling it is almost the same. There are two basic steps to follow in order to play the game at an online casino. Types of Bets

Roulette offers a few different kinds of bets at the table:

Column Bet

There are three boxes on the short side of the roulette table. These boxes are marked "2 to 1." Each box signifies the twelve numbers above it. By placing your chip in one of these boxes, you mark all of the twelve numbers above it (0 and 00 excluded). If the ball stops at any one of these numbers, you have a win. This bet pays 2 to 1.

Corner Bet

Corner bets are the same as street bets only they cover four numbers. The chip is placed on the cross where the four numbers meet. If the ball stops on either one of the four numbers it is a win. The corner bet pays 8 to 1.

Dozens Bet

It is possible to bet on a group of twelve numbers by placing your chip in one of the three boxes marked "1st 12," "2nd 12," or "3rd 12." A winning dozen bet pays 2 to 1.

Fifty Percent Bets

On the left, long side of the table there are three boxes. Each one of them covers half of the numbers on the roulette wheel (not including 0 and 00) in a different way. Your bet is a 50% bet between red and black or even and off or high and low, depending on the box. These bets pay even money, 1 to 1.

Five Bet

This bet covers the following numbers: 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. The chip is placed on the outer right boundary line of the roulette table, between 00 and 3. If either number hits, your five bets pays 6 to 1.

Line Bet

A line bet covers the six different numbers in two rows of three numbers. For example: 1,2,3 together with 4,5,6. You place the chip on outer right boundary line of the roulette table, where the line dividing the two rows intersects it. If the ball stops at any one of the six numbers you chose, it is a win. The line bet pays 5 to 1.

Split Bet

This is a bet placed on two neighboring numbers in the roulette table, this is done by placing the chip on the line dividing the two numbers. If the ball stops on any one of the two numbers, your bet pays 17 to 1.

Straight Up

This is a straightforward simple bet. You put your chips on a single number, including zero (0) and double zero (00). If the ball stops at your number, your bet pays 35 to 1.

Street Bet

Street bets cover three numbers. You place your chip on the outer right boundary line of the roulette table, next to the corresponding row of three numbers. If the ball stops on any one of the three numbers you win. This bet pays 11 to 1.
